History and culture
Originally called Gauri Marg (“meadow of Goddess Parvati”), the name “Gulmarg” (“meadow of flowers”) was given by Sultan Yusuf Shah Chak in the 1500s. Colonial-era landmarks such as St. Mary’s Church (1902) and the red-roofed Maharani Temple recall that heritage.
